As a responsible car owner, ensuring the longevity and safety of your vehicle should be a top priority. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is through regular car maintenance. By staying on top of basic upkeep tasks, you not only extend the life of your vehicle but also reduce the risk of costly repairs and accidents. At TrueCover, we understand the importance of proactive car care, which is why we’ve put together this guide to help you navigate the basics of car maintenance.

Regular Oil Changes

Oil is the lifeblood of your engine, lubricating its moving parts and preventing premature wear and tear. It’s essential to adhere to the manufacturer’s recommended oil change intervals, typically every 5,000 to 10,000 kilometres, depending on the type of oil and driving conditions.

Tyre Care

Proper tyre maintenance is crucial for both safety and fuel efficiency. Check your tyre pressure regularly and inflate them to the recommended levels listed in your owner’s manual. Additionally, inspect your tyres for signs of wear and tear, such as uneven tread wear or bulges, and rotate them every 10,000 kilometres to ensure even wear.

Brake Inspections

Your brakes are arguably the most critical safety component of your vehicle. Have them inspected regularly and replace brake pads, brake shoes, rotors or drums as needed to maintain optimal stopping power. Signs of brake wear include squeaking or grinding noises, vibrations, or a soft brake pedal.

Fluid Checks

Your car relies on various fluids to operate smoothly, including coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and power steering fluid. Regularly check these fluids and top them off as needed, making sure to use the correct type specified by your vehicle’s manufacturer.

Battery Maintenance

A dead battery can leave you stranded, so it’s essential to keep it in good condition. Inspect your battery terminals for corrosion and ensure they’re clean and securely connected. If your battery is more than three years old, consider having it tested and replaced if necessary.

Air Filter Replacement

A dirty air filter can restrict airflow to your engine, reducing performance and fuel efficiency. Check your air filter regularly and replace it if it’s dirty or clogged, typically every 15,000 to 20,000 kilometres. If you drive in particularly dusty conditions often, you will need to do this more frequently.

Scheduled Maintenance

Follow your vehicle’s recommended maintenance schedule outlined in the owner’s manual. This typically includes routine inspections, fluid changes, and component replacements at specified mileage intervals.

Pay Attention to Warning Signs

Finally, be vigilant for any warning signs of potential problems, such as strange noises, warning lights on the dashboard, or changes in your vehicle’s performance. Addressing issues promptly can prevent them from escalating into more significant problems down the road.

By following these basic car maintenance tips, you can keep your vehicle running smoothly, reduce the risk of breakdowns, and ensure your safety on the road. Remember, proactive maintenance not only protects your investment but also contributes to safer driving experiences for you and your passengers. Should you experience a break-down, all TrueCover’s car insurance policies come with roadside assistance.
